The Trail of Health & Friendship
Parenzana is an old narrow-gauge railway between Trieste (Italy) and Poreč (Croatia), nowadays converted into a recreational pathway. The name Parenzana derives from the word Parenzo, the Italian name for Poreč and the pathway has become a symbol of friendship between Slovenian, Italian and Croatian coastal town.
The biking tour takes you through old towns and villages, along the sea, among vineyards and olive plantations, through tunnels and across valleys. It is suitable for everyone. There are also many resting points along the way where you will be able to take a break and get interesting information about the history of the Istrian region.
You will start the tour together with a guide at the Cruise terminal in Koper. You will cycle along the coast towards the fishing town of Izola. Continue towards the valley of Strunjan, where you can admire the salt pans. Your guide will explain about the importance of salt for the Istrian region. After a short stop you will pass the Valeta tunnel and reach Portorož, one of the biggest tourist resorts in Slovenia with a beautiful sandy beach.
Your final destination will be the spectacular town of Piran. It is one of the oldest Slovenian town and one of the best preserved in the country. With its rich cultural heritage, narrow streets and charming Venetian architecture, Piran is considered a museum town, which makes it worth seeing. You will enjoy some free time to explore the town on your own. Afterwards we will take you back to Koper.
