Idrija – UNESCO Mercury Story
Anthony’s Main Road & Gewerkenegg Castle
Leaving Ljubljana you will board your vehicle for a scenic, one hour drive to Idrija which has for three centuries preserved the status of an “imperial” town. The tour provides a condensed exploration of most important attractions in the underground world of the mercury mine. Protected with helmets and overcoats, our guide will lead you through Anthony’s Shaft, dug back in early 16th century to the unique underground Chapel of the Holy Trinity equipped with the trinity relief and supplemented with the statues of their patron St. Achatius and St. Barbara. From here you will continue to the Gewerkenegg Castle, which dominates the old town. It was built in the first half of 16th century. There is an exhibition of the hundreds of years long history of the mercury mine and an exciting analytical exhibition of Idrija lace which occupies a remarkable place in the history of Idrija. The castle courtyard is appealingly decorated. Taking some free time and then driving back to starting point
